Secretary to the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation, M.K. Bandula Harischandra, today (30), said that plans are underway to strengthen measures taken to prevent elephants from consuming polythene.

According to the Ministry, 54 locations where elephants consume polythene have already been identified. However, the the number of places has been later reduced to 15, and nine locations have been protected to prevent elephants from entering.

In addition, several measures are underway to build elephant fences at Addalachchenai and Buddhangala garbage dumps in a bid to prevent elephants from consuming garbage.

Furthermore, the Ministry is planning to prevent elephants from consuming garbage at four more identified locations by 2021.
