Colombo, June 1 (Daily Mirror) – There has been a noticeable rise in illnesses such as dengue, chikungunya, and influenza among children in recent weeks, Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) Consultant Pediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera said
He told the Daily Mirror that the recent adverse weather conditions have contributed significantly to the rise in mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya.
He requested the public to take proactive measures to destroy mosquito breeding grounds in and around their homes to curb the spread.
“Children showing symptoms of dengue and chikungunya have already been admitted to the hospital,” Dr. Perera said, adding that while dengue can be fatal, chikungunya often leaves patients suffering from prolonged joint pain that may last for months.
Dr. Perera further warned that chikungunya could pose serious health risks to pregnant women and the elderly. Infections during pregnancy could potentially affect the unborn child, he added.
In addition to mosquito-borne illnesses, Dr. Perera also highlighted a rise in influenza cases, which he noted can spread rapidly among children. He urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, seek timely medical attention, and ensure proper hygiene to prevent transmission.
The medical community continues to stress the importance of public awareness and preventive action as Sri Lanka faces a surge in pediatric infections linked to both weather and seasonal patterns.
