At Weligama Bay Marriott Resort & Spa, this year’s Christmas preparations began with bowls of fruit, nuts and spices, and a boat. Guests and chefs gathered for the resort’s annual cake mixing ceremony on Friday 16 October 2026, bringing a festive tradition to the Pool Lawn with a nautical twist and the Indian Ocean close by.

The early-evening event brought together seasonal flavours, warm hospitality and the first hints of Christmas in Sri Lanka. For the resort, it also marked the start of a festive programme centred on food, gatherings and time by the coast.

A festive ceremony with an oceanfront setting

The ceremony took place at Weligama Bay Marriott’s Pool Lawn. In keeping with the resort’s oceanfront location, the traditional ingredients were mixed aboard a boat, giving the occasion a distinctive maritime setting.

The gathering was graced by Rohan Fernandopulle, a renowned culinary pioneer in Sri Lanka. Invited guests, resort associates and other distinguished invitees joined the celebration, which was complemented by refreshments and beverages.

The resort’s Kitchen Brigade played a central role in the occasion, helping bring the ingredients and ceremony together. In a hotel cake mixing, the activity is both preparation and participation: chefs and guests gather around the ingredients to mix the fruit that will later be used in the Christmas cake.

The boat provided a memorable focal point for this year’s event. It linked a familiar seasonal custom with Weligama’s coastal character, creating a celebration that felt rooted in the south while looking ahead to the wider festive season.

General Manager shares the spirit of the occasion

Piyush Tyagi, General Manager of Weligama Bay Marriott Resort & Spa, said the ceremony offered an opportunity for guests, associates and invitees to mark the season together.

> “The Christmas Cake Mixing Ceremony is a wonderful tradition that brings people together in the true spirit of the festive season. It was a pleasure to see our guests, associates and distinguished invitees come together to share in the occasion, creating memories that mark the beginning of a truly special festive season.”

The ceremony opened the resort’s festive celebrations, setting the tone for a season of culinary experiences, gatherings and moments by the ocean.

Why hotels hold cake mixing ceremonies

Christmas cake is often prepared well before it is baked. Dried fruits, nuts and spices are combined and soaked for weeks, allowing the flavours to deepen ahead of the festive season. A cake mixing ceremony brings people together at the start of that process, as chefs and guests mix the ingredients that will become part of the eventual cake.

The ritual has become a popular feature of the hospitality calendar in Sri Lanka. Hotels in Colombo and along the south coast often hold their ceremonies in October, transforming a kitchen preparation into a seasonal gathering. For guests, it is a chance to take part in the making of a festive favourite; for resorts, it signals the beginning of Christmas events and menus.

The custom draws on European Christmas baking traditions, but its character in Sri Lanka can reflect the island’s own ingredients and food culture. Local dried fruits and spices may feature alongside the fruit, nuts and warming flavours used in festive cakes. Depending on the recipe, spirits such as arrack or rum can also be part of the soaking process.

This mix of tradition and local character gives the cake mixing ceremony a place in contemporary Sri Lankan culture: it is a familiar seasonal custom, adapted to local tastes and shared in a distinctly communal way. Weligama Bay Marriott’s boat-side setting added another local touch, bringing the coast into the celebration.

Weligama and the December coastal season

Weligama sits on Sri Lanka’s southern coast in Matara District. The area is known for its bay beaches, surf breaks and stilt fishermen, and forms part of the southern coastal route many visitors explore during a Sri Lanka holiday.

For Sri Lankan families and diaspora visitors planning a December trip home, the south coast offers a chance to pair time by the sea with visits to nearby towns and attractions. A festive-season celebration at a resort also points to the variety of experiences available during the holiday period, from seasonal dining to relaxed coastal gatherings.

Weligama Bay Marriott’s ceremony is part of a wider seasonal picture across the island’s hotel sector. Other resorts, including Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort and City of Dreams Sri Lanka, have also held cake mixing events this October, bringing the custom to different settings around the country.

For the resort, the ceremony marks the beginning of a festive season shaped by food, shared occasions and its oceanfront location. It offers a glimpse of Christmas in Sri Lanka before December arrives, and a reminder that the celebrations often begin well before the holiday itself.

As the fruit rests ahead of baking, the season is already taking shape. In Weligama, it began aboard a boat, with the coast nearby and guests gathered to welcome the festivities.
