UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reaffirmed his commitment in addressing justice and accountability of reconciliation in Sri Lanka and the issues faced by Tamils, admiring the UK Tamil community’s contribution to British society, the Daily Mirror learns.
Hosting a gala feast to mark the Thai Pongal festival at No.10, Downing Street last Monday, Premier Starmer said his administration will commit to advocate human rights and justice for the Tamil victims in Sri Lanka.
The British Prime Minister hosted a vibrant and culturally significant Thai Pongal celebration at his official residence marking it the first such event under his leadership. The event also served as an opportunity to highlight the government’s initiatives aimed at fostering inclusivity and supporting minority communities.
The celebration attended by prominent members of the British Tamil community, MPs, the Indian High Commissioner and dignitaries, underscored the UK government’s commitment to recognising and celebrating Tamil cultural heritage.
In his address the Prime Minister said, “Thai Pongal is a time to give thanks for the harvest and to celebrate the values of gratitude, resilience and community. The Tamil community in the UK embodies these values, enriching our society with their culture, traditions and hard work.”
Addressing the gathering, UK’s first ever Member of Parliament of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage Uma Kumaran paid tribute to the work of British Tamils which spans healthcare, education, technology, business, arts, culture and politics.
“Together, our community has shown such resilience and determination but I’m proud to say that we are thriving in the UK and globally,” Kumaran said.
Members of the Sri Lankan Tamil community expressed their appreciation for the recognition and celebration of their culture at the nation’s highest office.
The Prime Minister’s residence had been adorned with traditional Tamil decorations including sugarcane stalks, banana leaves and a colourful kolam. The highlight of the evening was the ceremonial preparation of Pongal, a traditional sweet rice dish, symbolising gratitude for the harvest. Tamil musicians and dancers also performed, adding a festive and authentic touch to the occasion.
